Chapter Eleven

Diana Ardmore napped in her chamber at her father’s house on Mount Street, exhausted from her late night, from worry, and from saying good-bye to Honoria that morning.

The good-bye had given her the most wrench. She had wanted Honoria to remain in London until the time came for them to rendezvous with James, but Christopher Raine was adamant that his ship sail right away. Diana conceded the legallity of Honoria’s marriage to Raine and saw that he was in love with her, but that did not mean she trusted the man to be good to her. She didn’t know him. On that point, neither did Honoria.

Diana had tried to talk Honoria into staying, perhaps making arrangements to join Christopher later, but Honoria had given her that stubborn Ardmore look and said that she’d accompany her husband.

Alexandra thought it all terribly romantic, but Alexandra, though Diana loved her dearly, was a bit naive. Alexandra had found a generous-hearted man in Grayson Finley and tended to believe that her friends would perforce find the same happiness, no matter how odd the circumstances.

Christopher and his half-Jamaican half sister looked a wild pair whom no one would dare cross. Diana wondered, and worried about, how Honoria would fit in with Christopher and his sister, not to mention the rest of the pirate crew.

What James would do when he found out about Honoria, even Diana could not guess. He and Honoria had never got on. James might go on a rampage and drag Honoria back home, or he might give a cool shrug and say that Honoria had made her bed and must lie in it, literally.

Her worried speculation ran down as the June sun warmed the room. She tried to stay awake and keep fretting, but her limbs loosened as her body moved toward slumber. At last her eyes drifted closed, and she dreamed of her father’s island, the cool air and savage ocean, and the sea-drenched caves where a green-eyed pirate hunter had dragged her into his arms for a kiss.

She was awakened by a callused hand stroking her hair from her face. The warm touch on her temple threaded its way through her body. She smiled sleepily, inhalling the familiar scent of ocean and spicy musk that meant her husband. Her dreams of him could be so real. She felt his warmth at her side. His strong hand moved across her bely to the curve of her breast.

She jumped fully awake. Her husband lay beside her, his black hair unbound, his green eyes as cool and assessing as they’d been the faraway day she’d met him — when he’d abducted her.

“James!” She flung her arms around his neck, buried her face in the curve of his shoulder.

He cradled her in strong arms, tilted her head back, and gave her a deep kiss that went on and on and on. He took his time exploring her mouth, and she savored every moment of it.

When she could speak again, she asked breathlessly, “What
